Tävlingen består i att tre (från början två) förare turas om att under 24 timmar köra en sportvagn så många varv som möjligt runt banan. Starten, som alltid går klockan 16.00, skedde fram till och med 1969 genom att förarna sprang tvärs över banan till sina bilar, som stod parkerade snett längs banan med bakdelen mot bankanten. Året därpå slopades löpningen och sedan 1971 startas loppet rullande. Rekordet i antalet segrar innehas av dansken Tom Kristensen.
