National Hockey League 2008/2009 är den 91:a säsongen av NHL. Grundserien spelas mellan 4 oktober 2008 och avslutas den 12 april 2009. Slutspelet om Stanley Cup kommer att spelas mellan april och juni 2009.

Säsongen startades med fyra matcher i Europa där Ottawa Senators och Pittsburgh Penguins spelade två matcher i Globen, Stockholm och New York Rangers och Tampa Bay Lightning spelade två matcher i Prag i Tjeckien.

Den 25 januari 2009 spelades All Star-matchen i Bell Centre i Montreal, då klubben Montreal Canadiens firade 100-årsjubiléum.

Den 29 maj 2008 meddelade TSN att Chicago Black Hawks kommer att möta Detroit Red Wings utomhus i januari 2009 på Wrigley Field eller Soldier Field.

Den 15 februari 2009 blev Philadelphia's center Mike Richards den första spelaren i NHL-historien att för tredje gången göra ett mål i spel 3-mot-5 när New York Rangers besegrades med 5–2.

Den 17 mars 2009 vann Martin Brodeur, målvakten i New Jersey Devils, sin 552:a match, och passerade med det Patrick Roy som den målvakt som vunnit flest NHL-matcher.

Bland dom som gjorde sin första säsong i NHL fanns svenske Patrik Berglund som spelade för St. Louis Blues
