Jan-Olof Svantesson är professor i lingvistik, verksam vid Lunds Universitet.

Svantesson skrev sin doktorsavhandling 1983 om kammuspråkets fonologi och morfologi. Han skriver för närvarande en bok om modern mongolisk fonologi samt det mongoliska språkets utveckling. Svantesson undervisar i lingvistik vid Lunds Universitet.
